Wine has been Jim Gabler’s companion for over 30 years. During that time he has visited most of the world's vineyards, met many of the winemakers, taught wine classes, written five books relating to wine, numerous wine articles and a wine column, conducted wine tastings, and given talks on Jefferson and wine throughout the United States.
Jim has no commercial or financial interests in the wine trade. The weekly wine selection is based solely on his experience and judgment that the wine is fit for any table, i.e., it costs $25 a bottle or less, is generally available throughout the United States and smells and tastes good.
Descriptions of smell and taste are subjective. Nevertheless, wines made from different or the same grapes, grown in different soils and different climates, have distinctly different smells and tastes. If you can taste the difference in foods, you can learn to taste the difference in wines.
In judging wine, there are three evaluation keys that will allow you to distinguish one wine from another: color, smell (often called bouquet or aroma), and taste. These three keys will be discussed and evaluated with each weekly wine selection.
Since the publication of Passions: The Wines and Travels of Thomas Jefferson, winner of the 1995 “Veuve Clicquot Wine Book of the Year”, Jim has been the guest speaker on Thomas Jefferson and wine at hundreds of organizations, institutions and private clubs throughout the United States. Some of the more popular topics are “Jefferson in Paris,” “Jefferson in the White House,” “Jefferson's travels through southern France: the vineyards and Roman antiquities,” “Franklin & Jefferson in Paris.” Jim makes the talks come alive, and they are magical evenings.
